Before you buy
Check the actual measurements of the frame and the mattress, both in centimetres or both in inches, not the size name. The National Bed Federation warns that one shop's king size may not be exactly the same as another's.

Size chart: every UK size in cm and inches
The six UK sizes come from the National Bed Federation, the trade association for UK and Irish bed makers. Dreams prints the same centimetres for all six. Silentnight and Tempur print the same for every size in their UK charts, but neither lists a 75 by 190 cm small single; Tempur's only small single is 75 by 200 cm, in its table for adjustable beds. Inches are from the Dreams chart.

How we worked it out
We take the six UK sizes from the National Bed Federation's Bed Advice UK guide and check them against Silentnight, Dreams and Tempur. Every centimetre figure a maker prints in its standard UK chart matches the trade body's; if one ever differed, our build would stop until a person checked it. For the small single, only Dreams prints the trade body's size, and Silentnight counts four standard sizes: single, double, king and super king.
Inches come from the Dreams chart only. Silentnight's imperial figures differ: it prints the small double as 3 ft 11 in wide, where the trade body prints 4 ft.
Emperor has no trade body figure. Dreams and Tempur both print it as 200 by 200 cm, and Tempur calls it the largest of its special sizes, so we label it Depends on the maker. Euro sizes are makers' sizes too.
Queen is not a UK size: see the question below.
Silentnight says to round up to the nearest measurement. We round each side up to the next whole centimetre, or half inch if you enter inches, and look for an exact match against the trade body's centimetres or Dreams' inches. If none matches, we name the nearest UK size and the gap, and give no size.

it is important to check actual dimensions, in the same scale (metric or imperial) to be sure of a size match.

Questions
How big is a double bed in the UK?
A UK double is 135 by 190 cm, or 53 by 75 in, measured on the mattress. A bed can take more room than its mattress: Dreams says wooden and metal frames extend beyond the mattress, so check the frame's own measurements against your room.

What size is a king size bed?
A UK king is 150 by 200 cm, or 59 by 79 in, measured on the mattress. A Euro king is wider, at 160 cm. The frame can take more room than the mattress, so check its own measurements against your room.

Is a queen bed the same as a double?
No. In the UK, queen usually means the small double, 120 by 190 cm, and Dreams says queen is not an official UK measurement. Dreams adds that a few retailers use queen for a wider size closer to 160 cm, sometimes labelled a European queen, so check the centimetres.

How long should a bed be if I am tall?
At least 10 cm longer than the tallest person. The National Bed Federation says anyone taller than 180 cm should choose a bed 200 cm long, and that a UK king and a super king both measure 200 cm in length. If you are taller than 190 cm, a 200 cm bed is less than 10 cm longer than you; the National Bed Federation adds that some makers make beds 215 cm long.

How much room does a double give each person?
